Understanding kVA
kVA (kilovolt-amps) is a measure of apparent power. It is used to describe the total volume of power being used by a system. In a system which is 100% efficient, kW would be equal to the kVA, however, no electrical system is 100% efficient so it is understood that a system’s apparent power is not completely utilised for useful output.
1 kVA is equal to 1,000 volt amps. Volts is a measurement of electrical pressure, and amps is a measure of electrical current. The term apparent power (the absolute value of complex power) is equal to the product of the volts and amps.
What Does That Mean for Diesel Generators?
Simply put, the higher the kVA rating, the more power a generator produces. You can easily calculate kVA into kW by multiplying with what is known as the power factor. The PF is usually 1 for single-phase generators, which means kVA is the same as kW. For three-phase generators, the PF is usually 0.8. For example, a 20 kVA three-phase generator has a true power of 16 kW (20 x 0.8 = 16).
